Brown Penny by William Butler Yeats
I whispered, 'I am too young,'
And then, 'I am old enough';
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
'Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair.'
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.
O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love
Till the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.
1. How are the figurative language used in the poem?
Give the specific word(s), explain what type of figurative language it is and why the poet chose to use this figurative language?
"Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny" makes use of hyperbole. the word brown penny is emphasised through the repetition for this word to bring the attention to how the brown penny relates to the main point. the brown penny is also used to symbolise a lucky penny to help him decide if he could love someone.
"Till the stars had run away And the shadows eaten the moon."makes use of personification to gives the objects, stars, moons and shadows,a human element as stars do not run and shadows are not able to eat and moons cannot be eaten.
2. Tell us why you like this poem in no less than 100 words.
i like this poem by William Butler Yeats as he makes use of superstition about luck and everyday objects such as pennies or coins to compose a poem about something more complex than either of the objects. this also shows how unrealistic the theme of love is through the use of personification on mystical objects to give the entire poem an unreal and fantastical, mysterious feeling to enhance the meaning that can be brought out from the poem and the use of love being substituted in a decision made from the flicking of a penny believed to bring luck to its owner.

Ricola advertisement
i used to see this advertisement very commonly in the cinemas and on television.now,i am not very sure whether it is still shown.this advertisement uses establishing shot,close-up shot, medium shots, long shots, aerial shots and reverse shots. establishing shots and aerial shots are used to depict the background of hong kong and the mountains in switzerland. closed-up shot is used for the hong kong street singer and the european promoting the Ricola herbal candy which i know some students enjoy too.the medium shot is for the whole band of singers and the european. the long shot is only used on the european.the reverse shot is used to show a dialogue between the european and the main singer.

home learning
tomorrow would be the first of the two days of home-learning.that also means that i would not need to come to school on this two days!
during the home learning exercise, there would only be all the main subjects, which means that we would miss some of the fun subjects like art. however, i am rather surprised at the period of the break, which is 30 mins. furthermore, there are four lessons, therefore meaning 2 hours of breaktime!certainly, that is good news, but i am still baffled over how the whole thing works and having trouble trying to recall all the instructions and websites given to us.
i feel that this home learning exercise, however much i like it, would not benefit students as much as when they go to school.during the home learning exercise, everyone is independent, alone without anyone to ask for help, especially when the teachers have gone out for a education conference.i hope that the school would be able to improve our experience by improving these aspects of home learning exercises, such that we would not have to boggle our mind with all kinds of different information.
any way, its eons past bed time!got to go soon

second cca day
on the second day of robotics practice,we discussed about the answers to the previous test.on the previous post, i flunked the test.well,i got 7/25 which was a pretty horrible outcome but expected.fortunately,i wasn't the lowest as there was someone who even got a lowly 5 marks.
after a boring discussion of programming,in which i got distracted by the parts near me,i started building a robot instead. after the 2 hour discussion, which i suspect was used to waste time, they held a sumo-bot competition which you have to build a robot and try to knock it out of the battlefield, just like the sumo competition in reality.
we were partnered up with another student.my partner was someone who was completely ignorant about building a robot. in the end, i was the only one who was building the robot.i didn't manage to complete it in time and as a result,my robot was bulky but hollow

first day of cca
i found out that i was allocated to robotics.i was overjoyed!i was one of the ten people who were able to enter it!jason and liak ghee also entered robotics.
for the first lesson, the moment we went in, we had to take a hour long test on programming.as usual,i wasn't a programmer, but a constructor,so i flunked that test. after 30 minutes, most people had already handed the test paper in and shaking their head, frowning.well,i was badly stumped by the questions.after all,i hadn't gone for any robotics practice for almost a year.
i, unlike the other students, did my work on the stool, and therefore, was rather uncomfortable.some pupils, being a little too desperate, were discussing the questions while the seniors were gone to do their own work.
basically, i feel that no matter how badly you have done, you should not have resorted to unscrupulous means just to leave a good impression on the seniors.

cross-country event
well,it has been a long time since i posted,in fact,4 weeks.
i would like to share about my experience during the cross country event.the previous afternoon,i was down with a fever of 38 degree celsius.well,i got a medical certificate but still decided to go for the run.after all, this race is conducted only once a year and we might not even get to run this event next year due to the construction of the mrt station.i started fantastically, the first few in fact.i suddenly felt a wave of exhaustion, and i slipped back.despite my best attempts, i lost to tian le,wei kiat and jason... well,i cheered myself up by drinking about ten cups of milo.
i took 154 with kervin to eat McDonalds. one bus stop after we boarded the bus, the bus driver spoke to someone using the intercom, opened the door, adjust the mirror and went back to his seat again and switched it to off-service mode. along the way, he did this a multiple of times, all the way till we reached jurong point.we could see people with looks of confusion and anger.after eating,i went to top-up my ez-link card.well,a chinese worker in front needed help translating the words into english.so i helped him,but i wasn't very sure too.
anyway hope to hear from you soon

time to be serious
For the past few weeks, life is easy, but now it finally shows.
i am now coping with this odd schedule of having nothing to do on Monday and Tuesday
while coming back at 5 or later on wednesday, thursday and friday. the workload has increased significantly from 5 worksheet a day to 15 a day. So this is how secondary school is like...
anyway, i need to do my homework which i am rushing through now.
ought to go now

my experience in hwa chong
I am clarence tan of 1I3 and i have just started blogging, so please bear with me if i make any mistakes or if my post sounds a bit odd.
When i came into Hwa Chong, my first impression was that, it was so big, i even lost my way on the first day of orientation. I ended up in the international school instead. fortunately, one of the students there gave me directions to the clock tower.we had cheer practice and ice breakers. On the second day, we had our EP3 orientation.i could not believe i had forgotten to wear my PE shorts! the trials ended in failure. On the third day, we had to play games to get materials to build a structure that represent hwa chong. we, group 13 had ended up building a leaning clock tower. Our buddies told us to enjoy the orientation but i could not understand why should we enjoy cheering and shouting.
On the first day of school, we had icebreakers again and finally met our form teacher, mr Low. Our class greeted him and threw questions at him. he was quite humourous. Then, we had recess. I quickly ran to the western food stall before the queue formed. Overall, my experience in hwa chong was quite enjoyable. However, our buddies were right to say that orientation is more enjoyable than school, this proved it. On the third day of school, we were given six worksheets that were needed to be handed in on the next two days.
